AI citation optimization gets a company named inside the answers ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Claude give, rather than ranked in a list of links. A SIGNALS engagement is three things: measurement of where you are cited and where you are invisible, engine by engine and query by query, against the competitors currently being named; work on your own pages so your claims can be extracted and are grounded in something an engine can verify; and re-measurement that shows what moved. Citations are influenced, never guaranteed, and the engines move at different speeds — both of which we report plainly.
AI citation optimization services are the measurement and page work that get a company quoted inside AI answers. The distinction that matters to a buyer is where the answer comes from: an AI engine does not read a ranked list to your prospect, it composes an answer and names a handful of sources. Being one of those sources is a different outcome from ranking, and it is reached differently — most of it on your own pages, where the claims an engine needs are either legible or they are not.
If you are still deciding whether this category is real for your business, start with what AI citation optimization is, or how AEO differs from SEO. This page covers what an engagement actually involves.
The same three stages the whole practice is built on, in order. Nothing here depends on buying links or on a tool subscription you would have to interpret yourself.
| Stage | What happens | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Measure | Your category's real questions are run against ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Claude, repeatedly, and every named source is recorded | Your share of voice per engine and per query, and the list of queries where a competitor is named and you are not |
| Change | Work on your own pages: structure that can be extracted, vocabulary that matches how buyers actually ask, claims that are specific and sourced, schema that tells a machine what the page asserts | Rebuilt pages, new pages where the question has no home, and the substantiation an engine can check |
| Prove | The same queries are re-run after the changes land, engine by engine | A before-and-after per engine, including the engines that did not move |
Because that is where the citations come from. When an engine answers a commercial question it reaches for pages that state the claim plainly, in the words the question used, with something behind the claim. Most companies fail that test not because they lack authority but because their pages were written to persuade a human who already landed on them, not to answer a question asked somewhere else.
The corollary is that AI citation work is not link buying. Off-site substantiation matters, and it is part of the job when a claim needs a third party to stand behind it, but a program that is mostly backlinks is the old playbook wearing a new label. We cover the tests that separate the two in how to choose an AEO agency.
A single blended "AI visibility score" hides the finding that usually pays for the work. Engines source differently, so a company can lead three of them and be absent from the fourth across an entire category, normally for one fixable reason.
Our study of pharmaceutical process skid fabricators found exactly that: the two most-cited firms in the clean-in-place category were named by three engines on nearly every query and disappeared on ChatGPT on almost all of them. Averaged, those firms looked healthy. Broken out, a whole lane of queries was recoverable. That study is public, and it is the standard of evidence a first conversation should meet.
| If this is you | The answer |
|---|---|
| Buyers research you before they ever call, and the shortlist is being built by an AI answer | Yes. This is the case the practice exists for. |
| You rank well on Google and still never appear in AI answers | Yes, and the per-engine measurement usually explains it quickly. |
| You have an SEO agency or an in-house team you want to keep | Yes, with the boundary on page-level content written down before the work starts. |
| You want a dashboard to watch, and will do the page work yourself | A tracker subscription is the cheaper answer. Compare them in agency vs tool vs in-house. |
| You want guaranteed citations, or placement in a specific engine by a specific date | No. Nobody can honestly sell that. |
With your own data, before anything is agreed. The assessment maps where you are cited and where you are invisible across all four engines, against the competitors winning your category, and it is the same measurement the engagement later re-runs. If the assessment shows you are already named where it counts, that is a useful answer too, and a cheaper one.
A free, PULSE-powered visibility assessment shows where you're cited and where you're invisible across all four AI engines — your actual situation, against your competitors.
