How do you get cited by Google Gemini?

TL;DR

Gemini answers questions by running a live Google Search, pulling back pages, and attaching the exact chunks it used to the sentences it produced. Two things follow. Your page has to be reachable and indexable by Googlebot, which is ordinary technical hygiene. And the section it quotes has to answer one question completely, in the language a person would use to ask it. Ranking helps you get retrieved and does not decide who gets quoted.

How do you get cited by Google Gemini?

Getting cited by Gemini takes two things: being retrievable through Google's index, and being the passage that answers the question best. Gemini does not consult a private library. When a question needs current information it grounds the answer in a real Google Search, reads what comes back, and composes from those pages while keeping a record of which chunk supported which sentence.

The scale is what makes this worth planning for rather than watching. Google announced on 11 August 2026 that the Gemini app had passed 1 billion monthly users, which puts it among the largest single places where a buyer can ask about your category and hear a shortlist that either includes you or does not.

What changes in practice is the unit of work. Classic SEO optimises a page against a query and competes for a position. Gemini retrieves a page and then decides which paragraph of it to stand behind. A page can be indexed, relevant and still never quoted, because no single passage on it answers the question without the reader needing the rest of the page. Fixing that is editing, not link building.

How does Gemini decide which sources to cite?

Gemini decides which sources to cite through a grounding step that runs before the answer is written. Google's documentation for Grounding with Google Search describes the mechanism openly: the model formulates search queries, retrieves results, and returns grounding metadata alongside the answer, including the web sources used and a mapping from spans of generated text to the specific chunks that supported them.

That design has consequences for what you write. The model chooses its own queries, so your page is judged against reformulations of the user's prompt rather than against the prompt itself, which is why covering adjacent phrasings matters. Sources are attached at the level of a chunk, so a single strong section can carry a citation for a page that is otherwise unrelated. Grounding also happens per answer, so citation is decided fresh on every run rather than inherited from a stored ranking.

The retrieval mechanism is the same family of architecture used by ChatGPT search and Perplexity, which is why the fixes transfer between engines rather than needing to be redone per platform. Our explainer on the RAG pipeline and where citation decisions get made walks through the four stages and what fails at each.

What Google does not publish is the weighting inside that retrieval step, and anybody claiming to know it is guessing. The observable facts are enough to work with: the search is real, the sources are chunk-level, and the answer changes between runs. Build for those and you are optimising against the mechanism rather than against a rumour about it.

Is getting cited by Gemini the same as appearing in AI Overviews?

Getting cited by Gemini is not the same as appearing in AI Overviews, although the two draw on the same index and reward much the same work. Google now answers questions on three distinct surfaces, and a business that measures only one of them will report the wrong thing to its board.

Surface Where it appears How a source is shown What to measure
AI Overviews Above the classic results on a search page Linked cards beside a short summary Presence per query, and which page is linked
AI Mode A conversational tab inside Google Search Inline links within a longer answer Named mentions across a follow-up chain
Gemini app A standalone assistant on web and mobile Grounded citations attached to spans of text Whether you are named, and beside whom

Ranking position is a weak predictor on all three. ConvertMate's GEO Benchmark Study 2026, covering more than 12,500 queries across 8,000 domains, found that 83% of AI Overview citations come from pages outside the organic top 10 for the same query. Being on page one is neither necessary nor sufficient.

Treat the three as one body of work and three measurements. The page fixes are shared, because all three run retrieval over Google's index and all three quote passages. The reporting is not, because they move independently and a gain in AI Overviews can coincide with a loss in the Gemini app. Our guide to appearing in Google AI Overviews covers the search-page surface in detail.

Which crawler controls whether Gemini can use your page?

The crawler that matters for Gemini is Googlebot, with Google-Extended acting as a separate permission on top of it. Googlebot does the fetching that puts your page in the index that both Search and the generative surfaces read. Google-Extended is a robots.txt token with no user agent of its own: it governs whether the content Googlebot already fetched may be used for Gemini model training and for grounding in Gemini apps.

Google's crawler documentation states that Google-Extended does not affect a site's inclusion in Google Search and is not used as a ranking signal. Disallowing it is therefore a licensing decision about Gemini uses, not an SEO decision, and it does not remove you from AI Overviews.

The failure mode worth guarding against is losing Googlebot by accident. A staging rule left in production, an aggressive bot-management policy at the CDN, a page that renders its content through JavaScript after load: each removes you from the index, and with it from every Google surface at once. Check by fetching your own pages as Googlebot and confirming the text is present in the returned HTML, and repeat the check after any infrastructure change. Our guide to deciding which AI crawlers to block sets out the whole taxonomy.

What should you change on the page to get cited by Gemini?

Changing a page for Gemini means making individual sections quotable, then making sure the words in them are the words the question uses. Work in this order, because a later fix cannot rescue an earlier failure.

  1. Confirm indexability Fetch the page as Googlebot and check the answer text is in the HTML rather than assembled after load.
  2. Use the buyer's phrasing Write the title and every heading as the question a person types, not the internal name for the topic.
  3. Answer in the first sentence Open each section with the answer to its heading, then support it. A warm-up sentence costs you the chunk.
  4. Keep sections self-contained Never open with "it" or "this" pointing at the section above, because the reader arriving from a citation never saw it.
  5. Ground every claim Put a named source in the same paragraph as every number, so the passage survives being lifted out of context.
  6. Cover the fan-out Add sections for the adjacent questions the model will search for, since it reformulates the prompt into several queries.

Vocabulary is the step people skip, and it is the one with the strongest evidence behind it. Discovered Labs' 2026 analysis of 2 million AI citations across 10,000 pages found content alignment, meaning language that matches how buyers actually search, was the only page-level signal to survive domain fixed effects, at an effect size of beta = +0.37.

How do you check whether Gemini is citing you?

Check whether Gemini is citing you by asking it your buyers' questions on a fixed schedule and recording what comes back. Build a list of the questions people actually type before choosing a vendor in your category, run each one several times because generated answers vary, and log four things per run: whether you are named, whether the mention carries a link, which page of yours was used, and which competitors appear alongside you.

Do the same across the other engines and keep the results separate. A blended visibility score hides the case that matters most, where you gain in one engine and lose in another during the same month, which is the normal pattern rather than the exception. Our guide to tracking AI visibility across engines gives the protocol, the sample sizes and the arithmetic for share of voice.

Referral analytics will not answer this question for you. Most Gemini answers resolve in the app, so citation volume can rise for months while session counts stay flat, and a team judging the channel on clicks alone will conclude nothing is working while their name is being read out to buyers every day. Named appearances are the primary number here, links the secondary one, and sessions the last.

Frequently asked questions

How do you get cited by Google Gemini?

Be indexable by Google, then be the clearest passage-level answer to the question. Gemini grounds its answers by running a live Google Search, retrieving pages and attaching the specific chunks it used to the sentences it wrote. That means ordinary indexability is the entry ticket, and the thing that wins the citation is a section that answers one question completely in the words a person would use to ask it.

Is getting cited by Gemini the same as appearing in AI Overviews?

No. AI Overviews appear above Google's search results, AI Mode is a conversational search surface inside Google, and the Gemini app is a separate assistant. All three draw on Google's index, so the work overlaps almost entirely, but they select and display sources differently and you can appear in one without appearing in the others. Measure them separately or you will not know which surface moved.

Does blocking Google-Extended stop Gemini from citing me?

Blocking Google-Extended withdraws your content from Gemini model training and from grounding in Gemini apps, so it can reduce how Gemini uses your material. It does not affect Google Search indexing or AI Overviews eligibility, which are governed by Googlebot, and Google states that Google-Extended is not used as a ranking signal. Decide it as a licensing question rather than an SEO one.

Do I need to rank in the top 10 for Gemini to cite me?

No. Being indexed matters, but a top-10 position is not a precondition. ConvertMate's GEO Benchmark Study 2026 found that 83% of AI Overview citations came from pages outside the organic top 10 for the same query. Google's generative surfaces run their own retrieval over the index, which is why a precise answer on page four can be quoted while the page that outranks it is ignored.

How do I check whether Gemini is citing my site?

Ask it, repeatedly, with a fixed set of the questions your buyers actually type, and record what comes back. Run each prompt several times, note whether you are named, whether the mention carries a link, which of your pages was used, and which competitors appear beside you. Generated answers vary between runs, so a single check tells you nothing and a repeated protocol tells you the trend.
